Thread: VPS for VoIP

    Question VPS for VoIP

Anyone have any experience using Asterisk/Trixbox with VPS's? I'm just curious if they're capable enough to handle a good quality service or if there is something i should ask for when seeking a provider. (configuration settings/options/kernel parameters/timing)

In general, you would want to find a SIP provider with a presence that you can use within the same building as your VPS provider. For example, my VoIP setup connects to Broadvoice within Equinix Ashburn (where my servers are), so the latency between my Asterisk box and Broadvoice is generally under 0.5ms. In addition to the connection to your SIP provider, you need to consider the latency between your location and your VPS provider as well.

In general, if you are running a small asterisk setup, a VPS will be perfect for you. However, if you are running say a call center, you might want to reconsider. =]

I'm mostly looking for a vps to do 5-10 user conference calls and handle a few inbound DID's.

I'll do some research and find a good provider - possibly in the same facilities or nearby network.

One of these days i'll upgrade to a real server i'm sure but to keep costs down i've been considering VPS's. It would be nice of a sip company offered such services

this may have changed, but about 6 months ago asterisk wouldn't run inside of a vz vps, so you'd need to be looking at something like xen

Virtuozzo is officially supported by VoIPNow (zaptel/ztdummy).

You need to be careful in choosing a provider though, as a heavily loaded Virtuozzo node WILL degrade voice quality/performance. For a few lines you'll probably be fine, but start putting larger numbers on that server and you need a higher-end VPS with a decent provider or you'll hit problems.
