VPS needed, and memory question

Hi

Looking for a well connected Dutch, Belgium, France, UK or Germany based host. I'm not going to resell, I just need a very reliable spot (with a long future ahead!) for the following:

- 1 dedicated IP-address (SSL needed for 1 https domain, mostly for my private mail and that of some friends and relatives).
- private root-owned VPS, no snooping by admins etc.
- for now only around 7 GB storage (preferably on a 10000RPM or faster HDD)
- 6 GB traffic a month now, has peaks up to 10 GB.

I will have to run PHP, MySQL4 or 5 (for only 2 databases, and never more than 4 in total later on), and (my own version of) Squirrelmail, postfix, dovecot, apache httpd. I have about 4 www domains, not many more, for this server. Some extra sub-domain doc-roots and that'll be it.

All on Fedora Core 4 or 5, or CentOS.
Webmin and SSH are all I need. No controlpanels.

Not sure how much memory is needed for this. Any advice on this is appreciated. I never needed a VPS before, and the RAM looks very low on most VPS offers I see, is that enough?

Also, I rarely read about optional bypass on NAT or DMZ for the VPS, how does that generally work? Hardware firewalled would be best I guess, so there's no DDoS on your VPS.

If the specs are good I can pay in advance, around €300 for 3 years (including VAT/BTW).
<snipped>

Thanks in advance.

try a2b2.com. they have UK located VPS.

I host with them and they seem to be good.

you can have unmanaged, semi managed or managed vps.

i would recommend 256mb ram.

(the prices aren't bad either )

Sorry, they are too expensive for my needs. I'm currently running the above mentioned from home-based servers. I need something that equals the freedoms I have now, and saves me the electrical and hardware replacement bill, plus maybe some worries and time.

Electricity is around €10 a month, hardware-cost would be around €1000 spread over five years time.
I'd say 300 euros in 3 years should be more than enough to pay for what I need.

For a reliable VPS your going to need to increase your budget significantly.

Less than £7UKP a month will NOT get a reliable provider.

If thats your budget forget about VPS and go for a shared account.

I got 256MB Ram, 10 GB Space and 100 GB Bandwidth for 11.99 US per month.

They're offer is now closed (only available till 1st Jan), but you can wait for new stock.

P.S. Used it for 2 weeks now, 0 downtime, just abit of issue with their backups.

No. Navid (sahahost) has proven me he is a very reliable provider. And his offer is WAY below 7 pounds a month. (Those 7 pounds at a2b2 are without taxes even. Pff. I'm just not paying that for my kind of bandwidth usage.)

Since I'm against Bush anyway, I have no problems financing people from Iran
Navid's servers are housed in Frankfurt am Main in Germany.

It has not been down from where I live. (You might want to look into your ISP's preferences..)

You can find their offers here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...=572573&page=2
(might be too late though, getting the best offers..)

And reiteration: I have a lot of personal experience working with and for hosters, I've managed and still manage other people's co-located and/or dedicated servers here in The Netherlands (and some in Belgium and Germany), and I have no reason to believe Navid's VPS will disappoint me for my personal use. Up until now it's been the fastest server I've ever used, both connectionwise and service-wise. Navid is NOT overselling, and for an unmanaged VPS he's doing quite a lot of managing.
