It's a very close call I think... Both good configs.

I would go for the x2.

    almost identical configs...

I'd go with whatevers cheaper, otherwise go with the ECC ram config - but I place reliability above speed, and the opteron config is just a slight edge ahead in that area.

Whatever is cheaper, and then perhaps upgrade the ram, since that's often an issue with game servers... But those two are pretty much the same...

The Athlon X2 3800+ is 2GHz vs. 1.6GHz for the 242. On the other hand, the 242 has 1MB of cache per core vs. 512KB for the 3800. A dual 242 benefits from two sets of memory busses, but with only 1GB of memory I suspect that only one of those is in use. But then, the cores on the X2 chips are connected directly via the crossbar switch and don't have to communicate across HyperTransport. And if it's a socket AM2 3800 then it would have DDR2 memory instead of tbe registered DDR on the 242. But if it's a socket 939, it would only be DDR, but unbuffered and therefore lower latency. On the other other hand, the 242 memory is ECC, which could help avoid errors and game crashes. Then again, the 3800 is a slightly newer spin of the core, and might have some performance tweaks.

Personally I'd go for the 3800. But I think you can see why people have a hard time giving you a definitive answer.

    I would go with 2x Opteron 242. I think it's more reliable.
