    Advertising Forums post counts update

Beginning January 1, 2007, all posts in the Advertising Forums will no longer count in your displayed Post Count total.

This will be on a one week trial basis. We will revisit the decision on January 8, 2007.

Any privileges gained by your current post count will not be affected.

Feel free to post any questions or concerns.

Make the ad section for paid ads only. Inet is always so eager to earn a quick buck, I'm surprised they haven't thought of this yet.

What web site reviews / domain appraisals? Those posts should count.

While we're at it, why don't we just disable all post counts.....

Both are very GREAT ideas! Disable the posts but keep the levels of people [titles under names]

The paid advertise section sounds great, but with the pricing that WHT has for stickies would have to drop dramatically.

I would imagine it would be a bid-for-placement scheme, with an expiration date on each spot based on the date the ad was placed.

That's why I'm not in charge of WHT. I do know the ads forum needs a way to be more useful.

I agree that a paid ad forum would dramatically improve value and the level of offers being made. Stickies could still work with that model, although I'm not sure about pricing etc. SitePoint's marketplace is a good model of such. I think it's $20 to post an ad, or something like that.

The paid ad forum sounds like a good idea but the post count does not. Why would you waste your time changing someones post count? It's absolutely meaningless.

    Not from a moderation perspective

One of the problems within the advertising forums are people making 'useless' posts in order to bump up their post count - either to reach their first 10 posts to advertise themselves, or later on the 600-700 needed for a custom user title. <<< removed >>> The advertising forums are also filled with "nice design!" posts which really often add nothing and are simply a way for someone to add another post to their count.

Nick H from earlier in this thread is a great example - although there are many which are much worse - 1000 posts but 430 from the advertising forums. Hopefully removing the counting of advertising posts will also encourage people to post more in the main forums, contributing to the WHT discussion (if they feel the need to reach certain targets, as Nick does ).

We will hopefully be able to see some positive effects within the first week

This is why rules such as "no posts saying you have emailed/sent a PM" etc... exist.
    Wasn't that rule removed?

Yes, it should read 'existed'. I'll see if one of the other liaisons/leaders can correct my post. Part of the reasoning behind the rule when it existed was what I was getting at, to prevent people spamming away to increase their count. Consider it part of the process which lead to this proposed change/trial

Anyone can still find how many posts they have, or how many someone else has.

Simply search for all posts by [membername] on the advanced search page.

We're not taking away posts. We're only changing the way they're displayed (or not).

If you cannot afford $20 for a forum ad then you're not in good shape.

Yeah I would agree with Jeff, besides $20 is pretty cheap for an ad in any case.
