Hi~ Just signed up for the service but seems I haven't yet received any information regarding my account. Do I need to send anything such as the paypal receipt to you for verification? Thanks.

I must say this VPS offer is great - cheap and fast.

Setup was less than 30 minutes, very remarkable.

I am posting this here in hope it can be solved more quickly.

    Server :
    Basic Package.
    128MB RAM Added. (Total : 256MB)
    5GB Added. (Total : 10GB)

I was attempting to compile MySQL just now with configure and make.

    Code:
virtual memory exhausted: Cannot allocate memory
    make[4]: *** [sql_yacc.o] Error 1
    make[4]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27/sql'
    make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[3]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27/sql'
    make[2]: *** [all] Error 2
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27/sql'
    make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27'
    make: *** [all] Error 2
This was extremely weird, as I've tried this on a 256MB RAM Dedi-server before.
    It compiled without problems.

I then decided to try the --with-low-memory and see if it helps.
It managed to go further than before, but it still ended with :

    Code:
virtual memory exhausted: Cannot allocate memory
    make[4]: *** [sql_yacc.o] Error 1
    make[4]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27/sql'
    make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[3]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27/sql'
    make[2]: *** [all] Error 2
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27/sql'
    make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/servers/mysql-5.0.27'
    make: *** [all] Error 2
I then decided to take it one step further and stop all services except ssh.
    Still didn't work.

Additionally, the VPS was using 8% of System with the bare essentials loaded.
The CPU Usage was hovering around 0-1%.

After running the script, I checked it again on the VPS Panel.
System shot to 50%, CPU shot to 90%.

This is extremely strange for a 256mb ram (512 burstable) server.
I hope I will be enlightened as to why MySQL won't compile.

Do you have the same problem when compiling other stuffs like apache or so?
My advice is to download another version of MySQL and try it again~

    Not really related to compiling...

But Suse 10 could not start its online updater... due to lack of memory.
    ( Error : Memory Segmentation fault )
As this is of not much importance to me, I ignored it.

P.S. Suse is a fresh and default installation. I only downloaded a few packages.

BTW, were all of you only receive a signup receipt from webstar+paypal and there's no link back from paypal? Just to make sure that I haven't missed anything.

p.s.: Hong Kong's outbound connection is greatly affected by the Taiwan earthquake~ been very slow surfing at WHT~ hope will be back up ASAP~

    ymchiang :

    - MySQL is an EXTREMELY common piece of software to install
    - SuSE online updates is integrated into the OS, I'm quite certain its supported.

I have tried eurovps.com before and compiled MySQL with its 256mb ram vps.
I believe someone on the server is abusing its resources or the server is heavily oversold.

P.S. The server's great. I'm also affected by the quakes, but speeds and pings are still decent (240ms).

mihd, I would like to clarify that SmokyHosts is not overselling its RAM.

I've just been upgraded to 512MB RAM temporarily to aid installation.

I'm pleased to say it passed - perhaps virtualization software adds to the RAM usage.

It seems that I have had to put one here critics enough lasts so that me of support. It is already installed PHP, MySQL, and WebMin. It is as always, is necessary to put itself it last so that the things become.

It is already solved. Sorry that has placed one critics so hard, but I pay by a service that must respond when I need. He is why I did not saw but opportunity and sends critics it simply so that its business pays but attention to me, I do not want support in 2 minutes, I want “excuses by the time”, after all we are the clients those that we make a company…

    Thanks.

We understand the reason for you to become impatient as far as our support system is concerned. All this confusion and delay was caused because of the currently inactive support portal as we are currently upgrading our support system, and the only way now to contact us is by sending an email to our help desk.

We are trying our best to setup our support portal back as soon as possible.

Hope you continue to enjoy your stay at smokyhosts.com

webstars, I would also like to know if theres any way to chat with support.

Emails take at least 10-20 minutes for a response, which is highly in-efficient.

Just thought I'de chime in. I was reading prior posts about the memory issues. I do think, using common sense, there is just one server, that is way oversold.

Just a simple vps, nothing runing (fresh restart)

    Mem: 2044104k total, 1991252k used, 52852k free, 88208k buffers
    Swap: 4192944k total, 768k used, 4192176k free, 899532k cached

So obivously thats the whole node, My vps does not have 2 gigs total. And it is reporting that almost all 2 gigs are used up, awtih about 52 mbs free. Now, using common sense, thats why mine is messed up, because theres not 128mb free for my vps!!!

Now, just got response as I was typing this, and top is showing,

    Mem: 2044104k total, 1904164k used, 139940k free, 63452k buffers
    Swap: 4192944k total, 768k used, 4192176k free, 868908k cached.

Well, lets hope memory stays free!

    Bob

    Edit:

Server still coming up (application) as
    ./srcds_run: line 344: 19503 Segmentation fault $HL_CMD
Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Fri Dec 29 17:31:12 CST 2006: Server restart in 10 seconds

segmentation fault - out of memory. Obivously somethings not right with vps, because it works fine on vpsland 128, futurehosting 128, x1services 128.

    Edit 2:

    From wikipedia:
Segmentation is one of the most common ways to achieve memory protection; another common one is paging. Segmentation means that a part or parts of the memory will be sealed off from the currently running process, through the use of hardware registers. If the data that is about to be read or written to is outside the permitted address space of that process, a segmentation fault will result

    Rebooted vps again, and now

    Mem: 2044104k total, 1993076k used, 51028k free, 72240k buffers
    Swap: 4192944k total, 756k used, 4192188k free, 939420k cached

so theres only 51 mb free again? Not 128 for me? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

How many servers are on this one node ? Or does that whole top thing mean nothing?

Just from sitting, watching top, its going down!

    Mem: 2044104k total, 2000164k used, 43940k free, 72496k buffers
    Swap: 4192944k total, 756k used, 4192188k free, 942804k cached

nothings running!!!! just a fresh reboot, with nothing booted, except the main things like init, and iptables, i remvoed everything else (httpd, ect)

all the posts i made about the memory, seem to be the same issue that were talked about before by tsj5j and mihd. I really just have a feeeling theres wayyyyyyyyyyyy to many vps on the one node? Maybe its the only node!

    Hey all,
Currently due to the over-whelming response to our introductory price VPS, all our servers have been sold out, and so we would like to close this sale now and give full support to all our new and existing members.

We have never oversold any server, and do not wish to, so this offer is being closed here.

Thank you all for such a great response.

All new orders will be sent out as soon as possible. If you have any support requests, please contact us at [email protected]
