Best 24-port Managed Switch?
What are your recommendations for an affordable, rock solid reliable 24-port managed switch (1Gbps uplink, and at least 100Mbps ports)? I need web-based management and telnet/CLI. We are looking to move away from Dell PowerConnect.

While I am not even considering any dell product, I'd like to know the issues you are having with them, do you have another post or care to share the issues?

I would recommend the 3com 4500 26 Port Switch with 2 Gbps uplinks. I feel 3com switches are getting better and better.

Cisco 2950 / 2960, you can pick them up off eBay for simular prices you'd be paying for the Dell units new.

I would also suggest the 3524 cisco Catalyst. Two GBIC ports which you can use to create a stack or use for cat5/fiber uplinks. Run around 200-300$ on ebay from what i've seen.

the 3524s are garbage, on a budget I would stick with Catalyst 2950-T-24
(24 x 10/100, 2 x 1000 copper).
I can give you our sales rep @ AtlantixGlobal you can pick them up for ~$400
solid units for the price.

The HP Procurve 2626 is a great switch. We use these along with Cisco 2950T and I'm pretty fond of both.

I have had success with the HP Procurves, Cisco 29xx Series, and 3COM. In some cases, a NetGear switch was fine. John, is this for a LAN or POP or for what use?

I would have to go with a Cisco 2950T for cost purposes. You can get these on Ebay at a really good price. Less that 400.00 in most cases.
The 2960 is the newer version of the switch but the price is much higher for these.

What is wrong with Dell? I was about to order Dell Powerconnect 5324, it has 24 10/100/1000 ports and is ~$800, anything comparable from Cisco or HP is running >$1500.
thanks

We use Cisco 2950 as well as a 3COM. I prefer the 2950 for easier web management. With both switches I find the web interface to be slow and clunky. Overall the Cisco has never had a problem. You can get all sorts of different configurations of the Cisco Catalysts. My only regret is that you have to pay so much more for a GB switch. (Helps with doing GB sized backups manually) Overall I would probably not pay the premium for a GB switch - though I would pay an additional couple hundred if it were that little of an upgrade. The fun thing with the 3COM (as others have it too) is power-over-ethernet which is nice for a phone system. I had a hard time picking the right Catalyst switch (the 2950) - but I think it's an easy decision looking back on it. Just focus on finding the right Catalyst for your needs.

He is speaking, in specific, about the 3524. It is a good deal underpowered compaired to the 3550 and has fewer options. I truly don't think that it can be called garbage, But it is the lesser of the 3500 series.
I have 2 and they have served me well for several years.Last edited by vantage255; 01-04-2007 at 11:17 PM.

Well, I took the advice of forum posters here and tried out a reburbished Cisco 2950 from ebay. It lasted about 2 days and now has gone offline and I am trying to figure out what is wrong. Maybe I should have stuck with the Dell Powerconnect. Despite the webserver on it failing every now and then, it has been 100% reliable.

And I spoke too soon.. It was a cable problem, not a problem with the switch. I am a Cisco fan again

We currently are running using
SMC TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 - SMC8624T
Has everything you can imagine, a little tricky when setting up (with the way to save the settings) but once we got it running, hasnt had a problem since we installed it some 2months ago

We purchased 1 for testing, works fine. We kept it as a backup for our Cisco's 2950's.
