Best way to provision a database intensive server?

I will be ordering a Dual Xeon 3.4ghz HTT/2 Gigabyte of ram/2x 73gb 10k scsi server and I'm wondering what the best way to provision it would be. Also, kernal suggestions would be appreciated as well.

I'm a complete novice in terms of provisioning/updating kernels so please treat me as one

First, don't get that box, get a woodcrest, secondly make sure it is a 64bit operating system and hence forth 64bit kernels.

Well for the price I'm paying, this is an extremely good deal plus I really dont think I would need a woodcrest just yet.

Any one else have an opinion? How should I partition the HDs? They will be in hardware Raid 1

I'd use hardware RAID 10 on a database server. Disk access speed and RAM are usually bottlenecks before CPU. RAID 10 gives you much faster disk access.

Exactly- I'm asking what is the best way to partition the drive (2 in Raid 1) based on this config. I dont want to hear about how I should change the config
