Question Same ram, different number of sticks

I'm currently in the process of building a 1U server and I am not sure of the combination of ram to use, but I have heard its recommended to have ram sticks in pairs.

Which is more efficient, 4 x 512MB or 2 x 1GB? Price wise, they cost almost the same.

Personally I say 2 x 1GB as this leaves more slots free for expansion. If I had a nickel for every time I have heard "we will never need more memory" and turns out that was wrong..

Well I wont say we will never need more ram, but I do have 16 ram slots on the Motherboard, so space is not a problem, and the price is almost the same for both configurations as I mentioned above.

So apart from space issues, their efficiency is the same?
