Is it common practise to use mobile CPUs in servers to reduce power consumption?
Not common, but not uncommon.
The reason I'm asking is that my server at Leaseweb has a mobile 3100+, I'm just wondering if there would be much of a performance loss by using a mobile CPU. Mind you it is a budget server.
a few months ago leaseweb raised rack price because of energy price increase, maybe they are paying a high price for energy, but mobile procesors and motherboards are more expensive.
Mobile processors are more expensive, but they save power costs over time. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with using them in servers if you would have used a similar processor anyway.
Both Intel and AMD have CPU compare charts available, but as stated I don't think you get slower performance, just more aggressive power management.
