Host is charging me £52.10 for using 26.1 GB extra bandwidth!! Looking for new host.
To me this seems like an outrageous fee. Perhaps my ignorance is partly to blame, well ok... it is, but I was not aware of how their bandwidth allocation worked if I exceeded my monthly limit of 60gb. Oblivious to me, I used 26.1 GB over my limit from 11/18/06 - 12/18/06.
I only discovered this incurred charge after raising a ticket with them as to why I was denied the ability to add a database on my package.
I got the following reply in an email...

This charge just seems crazy, but i'm prepared to accept my ignorance is the largest component of this dilemna and pay it off and begin looking for an alternative host thats going to suite my requirements better. My current hosts largest hosting plan is 60gb's bandwidth which is no longer of any use to me.
I was looking at servage.net which claims to provide 2100gb for as little as $7.50 a month, which seems too good to be true from my limited knowledge of hosting. I don't know if anyone here has a better scope on this company?
I would be extremely grateful if I could get some suggestions for a new host. My site uses a phpbb forum and its fairly busy. I can post my awstats if its going to help.
Very glad to hear that you accepted responsibility - most people do not unfortunately. You might take a look at this thread since a lot of sites do oversell.
Having said that, I was with Hostway before it started offering unmetered bandwidth - which at times, my hosting bill a month would be over $1,000. They then started offering unmetered bandwidth for about $50.00 a month. So I jumped on that. You might check them out.
You don't really need to search for a host offering that much over your needs (I mean, if you're using 86 GB, why would you get 2100 GB if you don't need it?).
Probably you may want to contact to the potentials host on your list about what would happen when your site reach the bandwidth allowance, many would automatically suspend your site to avoid this kind of unexpected bills.
And at difference from Corey, I would suggest you to avoid any host offering unlimited/unmetered bandwidth.
I think i need to mention my forum is reasonably large with regular postings taking place - currently 253815 articles, as well as near 10,000 members since it started last year. The forum is the focal point of the site. However, its rare to see 50+ members online at the same time. On an average day theres usually about 10-20 users online throughout the day.
I'm just stating this as i'm wondering if shared is still a viable consideration for me.
