For some strange reason, for the past 6 months my ftp doesn't maintain connections well and after transferring several dozen files, it quits due to an "uknown socket error" - at least that is what ftpvoyager tells me. It's not the client. I've used all the others and the same thing happens. Essentially it's always the same:
FTP Voyager - Version 184.108.40.206
421 No Transfer Timeout (300 seconds): closing control connection.
ERROR:> Unknown socket error
STATUS:> File transfer canceled.
I can transfer roughly 50-300 items in one shot. It usually works although sometimes it quits earlier. I tried SmartFTP as well (CuteFTP is the worst. Good app but I always get file transfer errors where a file will be corrupt upon upload. They have never figured out why some files just won't transfer properly.)

It seems to be a firewall/AV problem. Check the norton configuration and disable Worm protection.
Another common reason is that a firewall software (Zone Alarm, Norton Personal Firewall, etc) running on your system is stopping from making outgoing connections.
If you have Windows XP firewall enabled and a third party firewall software (e.g. McAfee Personal Firewall, ..) installed, disable the Windows XP firewall or uninstall the third party firewall software. There are known problems with having both firewall applications running at the same time
If you are running "Norton Anti-virus 2005" and having strange problems connecting, disable the "Worm protection" or permit full access to the "sfFTPLib.dll" in the SmartFTP program files directory. If McAfee VirusScan v8 is installed and the "Spyware Plugin" is enabled, go to McAfee VirusScan Console and uncheck the "Prevent FTP outbound" option in the "Port Blocking" dialog of the "Access Protection Properties". Or add the SmartFTP.exe file to the exception list.
