Not so good, under 500 KB/sec. The C4D is still hitting around 1 MB/sec to make sure it's not an issue on my end.

In that case, it may have just been the server you were downloading from with the issue and not C4D's network. C4D has pretty good routing via Level(3) and Internap and I wouldn't fault their network in that respect. If you do some basic TCP/IP tweaks on the boxes you run there (e.g. enabling window_scaling, increasing the windows, etc.), I'm sure you can always push over 1mbyte/s on each download.

    I agree with that.

Here's some testing that I did:

PTP really does have a sweet network and I wouldn't hesitate to colo with them.

http://stats.ptptech.com/ is a nice page showing just how open they are about their performance as well

    No doubt. Though C4D would get you more "even" speeds from coast to coast. PTPTech peers directly with some broadband ISPs now though, which is great;

The PTPTech did yield the fastest I've seen ever on my broadband connection, steady at 1.54 MB/sec. I'll inquire with them.

If you do some basic TCP/IP tweaks on the boxes you run there (e.g. enabling window_scaling, increasing the windows, etc.)
What are the tweaks (IIS6 or TCP, etc.) that can be done to "push" the fastest downloads OUT. I've heard of some TCP tweaks but they are for downloading IN to the server, not necessarily pushing data out.

    I'm running Windows Server 2003 / IIS6

I see that PTPTech is in ashburn, VA. Good that it's close to me (I'm in Richmond, VA) but I wonder if that's why I saw 1.54 MB/sec? Any west coasters that can give stats on the PTPTech download speed test?

A download I posted before was from Los Angeles, CA I was able to pull 1mbyte/s, but yes, decent is the main reasoning behind this and that is why C4D is probably a good choice - 'equal' speed to both coasts.

I'm not sure about Windows as I use *nix primarily but I'm sure Google can help you find something.

I did various WGET's from the test downloads here from my server at Hivelocity.net which is on a 100 mbit using Level3 out but BGP in (Cogent is their other provider). From the server in Tampa, FL I actually saw better rates from C4D than PTPTech, again, a location issue most likely as to why I saw better from PTPTech from here in Richmond, VA. So I'll investigate with both C4D and PTPTech as I have e-mails into both already. I did a test download provided from Netriplex, not sure which data center it was coming from, but unimpressive. I'll see if they can give me a test from Atlanta. Here are my tests and results, keep in mind one was a local download test from my own server.

it should be noted that the link I provided is on GNAX's silver network (Cogent / Telia) outbound

you may want to look at the option of their gold network (Savvis, Global Crossing, Telia, PCCW/btn, AIX Peering)

    http://www.netdepot.com/speedtest/

I can get 1.89MB/s on their gold speed tests.

In that situation I'd say get a server on west coast and east coast unless you can't split up. That way you'd deliver good speeds to everywhere in the US.

Level(3) Richmond is in western Henrico County. It's probably the only Tier-1 provider/co-location facility in the area. You might want to check it out.

Our former parent company used to be a considerable client of that facility, very high quality place. My only complaint was that you have to provide your own battery backup otherwise all of your equipment will be rebooting itself whenever they switch to generators.

That doesn't make a difference. TCP/IP limitations amongst other things [such as HE's horrific routing] are going to be the limiting factor for speed.

Just for the record, I got about 700KB/s both from my LA network and from my home (also LA) cable line on the PTPtech download.

I think I found it: co-location richmond the Level(3) setup. It seems awfully expensive.

I'm amazed at how many colo providers offer 1/2 racks with just 7.5 or 10 AMPS. There is no way in he|| a half rack of servers is going to fit in that power limitation! My setup of servers, tape backup, switches, direct attached storage, all together consumes 15 AMPS so I need 20 AMP circuits, also due to the plug style of my UPS's.

You're looking at paying around $600 - 700 for a 20A/110V cabinet there. They don't have half cabinets. Get with a Level(3) reseller.

Most places are only going to offer you 10A or less with your half cabinet due to facility power and cooling requirements.

Allowing you to pack every last unit of the cabinet with your equipment and still have power to spare is not the intent. It's certainly possible if your facility allows it, but it's not necessarily adviseable unless you like hot equipment.

I'm going to be on the phone all day Tuesday! I have quite a few e-mails in for quotes. But regarding Level3, Hivelocity.net whom I'm using now has me on their Level3 "premium" bandwidth but I'm not seeing results. When I joined, it was fast. I am only speculating, but they have done something to their load balancing and I have a feeling they are trying to save money on bandwidth and "govern" all traffic. It just makes no sense that once upon a time they were fast and now they can't deliver! I don't want to blame Level3, but everytime I go to HV they tell me they are testing external to their network and getting good results, but I can't and I'm not that far from Tampa at that! FL to VA shouldn't be that much drop off! Something fishy is going on with their configuration, intentional or not! They are using Foundry switches, not sure if that's an issue or not. All the reputables that we've tested in this thread are using Cisco.
