    Dedicated Server NOW

    Hi,

I need a dedicated server fast. I'm having a forum with 20,000+ users but not to many online at the same time. I'm using vBulletin and PHPCow frontpage.

Currently the max amount of 15 mysql connections are not good enough and my site have been offline since last night.

Is there any good DS out there also ready to do the transfer for me ?

    Thanks

Well, if you want some help from us you are going have to give us some more information. Such as how big your budget is. Also, do you need windows or linux based hosting.

You may also want to check out the offers section so you can get an idea what is available to you.

sorry. I need a linux based and my budget is max $150 - $200 per month. I just found a couple of threads now, but what is actually the difference between managed and unmanaged ?

    Thanks

un-managed - Basically the server is setup for you and you are responsible for everything on the server. The DC you get the server from is only reposnsible for making sure the server is up and running and you can connect to it. Beyond that it is entirely up to you to do everything.

Managed - Managed can mean many different things depending on which hosting company you go with. So be sure to ask what exactly is inlcuded in their managed server package. In essence, managed means they will work on tech issues with software, email issues etc. basically anything that goes wrong with the server they are reponsible for.

Many people find it is much cheaper and easier to get a server that is fully un-managed and go with someone like seeksadmin to manage the server for you. Then you only pay when you need to for help with the server.

I suggest you check with LiquidWeb. I've been quite happy with them and you may be able to use a VPS instead of a dedicated server.

A VPS is somthing you may want to consider, however Im not sure it would be able to handle everything. You may find yourself not having enough cpu or ram when you have alot of people on your sites. SO if you do get one, make sure you get one that is a nice chunk of a nice highend server.

EV1 has some servers which have instant activation.

LayeredTech (great provider, I should add) has rapid-deploy servers which have 12 hours max deployment after payment.

Just keep in mind LayeredTech is fully un-manged so they wont transfer your files or anything for you. Just thought i would point that out.

Also, get PSM (platinum server managment) for your management company if mangement isnt included. They are awesome.
    Whats wrong with them ?

You may want to try out a reseller from someone, generally the larger resellers (I.E. server4sale, beachcomber, etc.) offer pretty good support, and can get stuff done at the datacenter rather quickly. Those would be the more cost efficient providers in my opinion.

However, if you can come up with the extra cash, a fully managed solution from someone like fastservers.net.

I recommend you check out Soft Layer and get a managment company per job.

Are those dedicated server prices usually without a database ? Everytime I choose one the prices shoots into the air. What I need is a MySQL database, not MS SQL

MySQL is free, MSSQL is not. All you'll need is a regular linux server. Generally those come with the following:

    Apache webserver
    MySQL server
    SSHD - ssh server
    FTPD - ftp server
    email software - obvious
    bind - nameserver

Aside from that, you won't need more. However, if I were you, I would definitely get a cPanel license, it'll probably come in handy.

ok, so I just choose "no database" then I get the mysql one right ?

I'll think I'll try layeredtech this time, but where can I find someone to manage it for me ?

I would go with a managed solution, or you'll loose lots of time taking care of it, month after month.
LunarPages has some solutions, and Servint is also excellent. Just be sure to get the fully management service. PM me if you want me to help you get a special deal with them.

I would definitely recommend you go with a managed solution. You can contact www.got-management.com or www.servaxnet.com for your management needs. Both of them do a great job.

For servers you could check out Gnax, they have some machines ready to go.

@ampersand: Don't listen to Glexia -- Look at this thread if you want to know why. LayeredTech are great but it doesn't seem like what you're looking for. You could get a server management company to manage your unmanaged server if you like, I think that'd be ideal for you.

Dedicated NOW offers management plans for an extra fee. Their techs reply very quickly (usually within 20 minutes) and know what they are doing. I was with them for almost a year and they were great.
