Growing forum hosting needs

Hello everyone,

Present Hosting Issue
i am mistyduck, I am non-technical person and a new entrant to internet business. In late october 2006 I started a new forum with adult content. I opted for dreamhost coz their 'crazy domain insane' suited my needs and my pocket. I was not very sure about the direction in which the forum would go, so monitory consideration was high. In less than two months the forum has over 5000 members and over thousand unique users every day. Alexa ranking shot up too (Woha for a newbie)

last week, I experienced 'internal server error' and reported to the host, they resolved it very quickly and told me it was an error in apache. I am kinda worried now. I use vbulletin and it is mysql intensive, i am worried it will eat up all the cpu minutes and the host will suspend me. The following are some of the question thats bothering me a lot.

1. Is my forum already red flagged by my host? Will talking to the host help?
2. Will upgrading my account help?
3. Till what CPU minutes am I safe with dreamhost?
4. Is there a good host who can bail me out of this quagmire?
5. Is it time for me to think about VPN or dedicated servers?
6. What should be my budget estimate per month if I want to keep my forum running without hassels.

Other Hosting Issue
My other project include developing a gallery website with web 2.0 features that requires high db usage. The requirement is 1 GB storage space and atleast 20 GB monthly bandwidth which can be upgraded in future. This is non adult content project. I looked at bluehost and it sounds impressive. Axishost is impressive as I have a website running with them, but I dont know how will they respond if it is db intensive.

Thank you for all in advance.

mistyduck

Hello mistyduck, welcome to WHT

About your forum, do you know aprox what's the max number of users online at the same time? and average? What forum software are you using? (phpbb, vbulletin, SMF, etc)

About your gallery, what script are you using for it?

Hi jedito,

Thanx for quick response. I use vbulliten, the avarage users are about 400, at times it shoots upto 600. Regarding the gallery, I use joomla as a foundation with intention to use mootools based extensions.

thank you

Online at the same time? If so, then start looking at a Dedicated server fast, because you won't last long on DH!

I agree with MrRadic, for 400 users at the same time, you better start looking for a dedicated, you wont stay long at any shared host.

hi,

After going through various forums, I signed with slhost VPS starter package today, they allow adult content and pretty good on pocket. They answered all my queries very quickly and now helping me to migrate from DH shared account. I guess instead of jumping directly into dedicated server I made a right choice($$) for opting VPS.

thank you

mistyduck
