I have become co-admin of a site in the past 3 months. We have now added a gallery that is growing, and we have a forum running too. Next month we are looking to relaunch our site and will be using Joomla as our CMS. My worry at the moment is that we are on a VPS with JaguarPC, and at times when I am playing with Joomla on our VPS account it runs quite slow. So looking to move to a dedicated server purely for the CPU resource.
We receive average 85,000 hits per day.
Run a forum
Run a gallery
Will be running Joomla
Monthly bandwidth is at about 17gb.
The server does not need to be managed, I have enough know how myself, and also have a work colleague who is happy to pitch in. He is extremely knowledgeable as he manages his works servers for a software dev company.
I have been looking at the hetzner.de as they seem to have pretty good bang for the dollar. Now please keep in mind the site is not a profitable site, we make some money off it, but not enough to cover costs. So I am paying for this out of my own pocket.
What is the main advantage to me being in Australia to have a lower ping time ? Will this just decrease the initial load time for the page to start loading ? Or will it affect the load time of every image on the server ? I ask this as the ping to hetzner.de is 354ms.
I have looked at liquidweb etc, however their pricing is beyond my budget unfortunately. If I was making a good margin on the site i would have no problem shedding some more dollars for someone more reputable.
It mainly depends on where your audience is. If they are located in Europe, get a server in Europe or eastern US, if in Australia and the far east/asia, get West Coast. You could also look at some providers in Hong Kong.
The server you mentioned should do fine for starters. Take into consideration your sites' growth. If they are growing rapidly, invest in some better hardware to accomodate that. If it's slow and gradual, you can get that P4 2.8 and be happy with it for a while.

I agree that our specs don't require a dedicated box. However we do suffer at times from CPU shortage on the VPS due to people uploading images to the gallery. Considering it is $40 a month for the VPS, $60 a month for the dedicated box is probably not a bad investment.
I think i've now talked myself into getting the box
