By locking the domain you can prevent some unauthorized domain transfers. You need to unlock the domain to transfer to a new registrar. Some registrars also prevent you from changing certain information whilst the doain is locked.

When the domain is lock it prevents the domain from tranferring. Normally the domain is locked after registration. If you want to tranfer the domain you need to unlock it from your domain control panel.

It's better that your domain name stay locked. I have a few cases that someone attempt to transfer my domain name out before EPP was introduced.

I think the lock does not mean as much considering you now need an EPP code to transfer a name away

A domain still needs to be unlocked to transfer away. Even with an EPP code.
