    Poor DVD Sound quality

I'm at a bit of a loss. On my desktop, which I recently reformatted, the sound quality from playing moves encoded with DivX is absolutely awful. There's a great amount of distortion, and signal loss, resulting in terrible sounding movies. I originally though it might have been some kind of interference from the electrical cords, so I changed the setup to avoid that completely, but that didn't fix it. I didn't realize that MP3's are also playing fine. I've tried playing with the settings to no avail.

Any suggestions? I don't think it's the sound card drivers at all, but I really can't see how the DivX plugins would effect the sound quality.

This only happened when my nerdy friends tried to get me into downloading dvds.
