I joined the network a few months ago, when i joined i asked Owen the owner "Do you guys do monthly backups?" - he said "Yes."
So I thought I was on a good network, well I was wrong.
A few days ago the owner of the network deleted my account for no reason. The network was hosting me for free, but when it started it was a free hosting network. I lost ALL of my files, and when I asked Owen for thr backup, he said there wasn't one. Hmmm.
On IRC myself and other people on the chat were asking owen querstions about why my site (www.esimps.com) was deleted:
((owen also lied to me and told me that a new admin deleted my account on accident, a lie))
Here are some exerps from the chat:
(Owen): yawn same stuff over and over, well from one guy, go report me just use plausable deniability or w/e, so unless you have proof of purchase .etc you cant do much, and yeh i delete your account so i could fit more porn onto my server if thats what you want to here
(Owen): anywho brb
(o|away): nor does oeck, we just deleted your account, during routine exercises, and being a free hosted company it was your responsibility to back it up in any case of this event
What do you all think I should get from the network? I mean they lost ALL of my files, I am left with nothing. And when I asked owen if he had gotten ANY of my files back:
(cams): get any of my files back?
So what should the network do for me? THEY HAD NO TOS UP AT THE SITE EITHER.
Post a reply... do yuo think i deserve some compensation?
>>> Joe Cams (esimps.com, nothing left of it anyways)
Well Joe, you were hosted by someone young for free and even if you paid for your hosting, ultimately you are responsible for backing up your data, even if the host does it. Why? Because no one cares about your data more than you. Sorry for your loss, however you need to move forward from now on (lesson learned) and start again.
Ok sorry to bring up old topics, but am fairly new here just starting to post more and more, and this notice has come to my attnetion, and I would like to clear a few things up, in case of future complications.
At the time I knew Joe well, almost personally, and offered him free hosting at the time we were starting up with a couple of servers, of which still had alot of work and upgrades to the servers still in the process. The reason him having free hosting above anyone else was along with a couple of other people I knew they were to test out our services, and ultimately help us in places in which we could improve.
Backups are taken daily for our use only, incase of any attacks/hacks or loss of data caused by us may rarely happen, but at the time backups were not taken for free testing users and it was at their own responsibility to backup their own data.
At the time I was also 17 and not of 13, since which I have taken on more staff and also had a couple of other staff originally who helped us become what we are today. The reason for my un-professionality at the time to Joe here was that he had been spreading lies to people within a community of people that were also later good customers of ours, and he had been abusive towards us.
His data was lost as apart of upgrades of services, where the account was hosted on an Ensim box, where after a few upgrades a few accounts had become in an inconsistant state, and of which an administrator of our tried to fix, a couple accounts were lost including Joes here, though the other accounts were restored from our remote backed files, and due to the fact that it was his own responsibilty to take care and back his own data up either locally on a computer or remotely elsewhere on an alternate account of his, we were unable to restore his data. We offered to re-setup the account, but he refused, and after settleing this matter we compensated him with a small free account on one of servers for a different website of his.
Finally the reason of which there was no TOS available on our site, was mainly because we were still testing and had not completely made our services available to the public at that time, and only later after we had officially opened did these problems arise.
Originally posted by Watcher_TVI So you have a habit of backing up everything but the site of a guy who you said you were friends with?
Joe, unfortunately you learned a tough lesson and should move forward. Always make your own backups.
Judging from the responses I see Owen make here I would look for a new host. There are some very inexpensive ones out there..
Oh and Owen, this is a period <.> Not to be confused with the comma <,> the period is your friend...
Wouldnt really say friend, but I knew him alot, at the the time I backed up site weekly, but only the ones that paid for their hosting/reseller accounts.
Just posted the response for future interested customers, of which may come accross this, as I have a stable hosting company with many satisfied customers, and would hate to have a minor mis-understanding, like this stop them.
