Starting my own forum

I was thinking of starting my own forum. I will probably use VBulletin. Do you think yahoo professional is a big enough server to serve my medium-sized weightlifting forum?

thanks a ton, mark

You may want to aim your sights towards a slightly smaller host, as hosts like Yahoo are more restrictive with CPU and server resource limits.

Do you have any idea on how much storage or bandwidth you'll need, as well as a budget?

Sorry, but I know jackshit about computers, haha.

Well my budget for a server alone probably shouldnt exceed $40 a month is possible.

I'll probably have around 150-200 members at first, each making a few posts a day, let's assume. You dont think Yahoo would be a good option? Well then you give me a link or two to a company you think would be more suitable?

thanks, mark

$40 per month is definitely an acceptable budget.

Honestly, there have been many <<< >>> threads about Yahoo's hosting environment. Personally, I wouldn't use Yahoo hosting for any important site, and I'm sure many others here will agree with this statement.

Check out www.medialayer.com or www.steadfast.net.

Make a list of about 5 hosts and search for reviews/feedbacks. Your budget is definitely good and you shouldn't have any problems finding a sufficient package for your forums.

Try looking here, you might find something good: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4.

I wouldn't go with yahoo either.

You may want to search about yahoo hosting on this forum before signup with them, the package indeed is big enough, however, I suggest you to make a search.

Vbulletin for far is the best forum script that I ever used, if you can afford it, go for it.

Cool

As said above you can easily get hosting within your budget with someone with more personal service (which you might need since you don't know jack) and less restrictions than somebody like yahoo. In general the consensus here has always been that yahoo is a good search engine, Dotster & GoDaddy are good for domain names but to these companies hosting is an "add on" and while some people are happy with them most end up moving to hosts who specialize in hosting

Check out
Thank you, Steve.

For the second link, do you think the Bronze VPS program is suitable to handle around 100-200 posts a day? Thanks a million.

Mark

Medialayer actually has a better hosting environment (contact them).

Although, if you'd like to use the second host, I'd actually recommend using their shared environment. As you stated, you don't know much about computers, so more than likely you don't know how to administer a server. 100-200 posts per day also isn't that much.

Their site is down atm.

But for the second one, if I used the shared, I could probably get the gold or ultimate versions. If I did this, no one thinks I would have any space problems until I became a huge forum?

Thanks to all responses, sorry I can't quote them all. Did you all know that the bodybuilding.com forums cost over $100,000 a year to maintain. I spoke with their CEO and he told me that it's because they are so huge. So if I could get away with $40 a month, that'd be awesome!

I would choose a really good host, maybe one with fantastico so you can easily install scripts.

Medialayer doesn't have a site at the moment (it is up though), although they still provide quality service. I'd choose Medialayer before the Steadfast in terms of a shared hosting environment. Try shooting them an email.

If you purchased the gold or ultimate plan, you'll probably need a dedicated server before you use that much. Since you're just starting, I'd say that the silver plan would easily suite your needs.

Bodybuilding.com more than likely has a cluster of dedicated servers and definitely isn't running from a shared account.

Well I am sure that if you started off smaller you could always upgrade on your host.

I will contact Medialayer as you say.

But as for the other one, if I get the silver package, is that all I will need in order to be set? Then I can just upload the VBulletin software onto it and my forum is up?
