Help Assess My Needs
I've been looking at servers and lately I've been thinking about everything I'll be running on my server and what my requirements really are before I just go out and buy something.
I don't really have the budget for multiple servers so here is everything that needs to be crammed on the box.
Apache, MySQL, Scalix, SVN, DNS, and Mongrel.
I do a lot of free hosting for other developers and I have about 20 sites or so. No one really uses a lot of space, its mostly just to test scripts or do demos for clients, school, whatever.
The SVN gets hit the most with everyone checking their projects in and crap. It doesn't take up a lot of space, but it does use a lot of bandwidth.
I was thinking something around this range.
Core 2 Duo, 1 or 2gb ram, 100mb port, 2x160gig HD, ~1TB/month running either CentOS or Ubuntu (I'm still not sure).
As far as hosts go I was looking at one of the following.
Gigenet, Superbservers, and Wiredtree.
I'm looking in the ~150 range I guess. I don't make any money from this box so price does come into play. I almost went with two corenetworks boxes but they never replied to my email so they went out the window real quick.

I was wondering about that thread title there for a second.
Gigenet has a very stable network and great staff - if they're in your price range I would definitely recommend trying them out.

I've been with Gigenet for a few weeks now, and I really love their support. My various support tickets have been replied to in 15 minutes or less.
Haven't had any hiccups yet except for today... I was playing in SSH and then the whole server went down. I couldn't remote reboot, so I called in immediately.
Got a call back a few minutes later, apparently my power cord was a little loose and a tech working on a server in my rack accidentally bumped it.
I guess the situation could of been a whole lot worse if we didn't monitor our servers 24x7, but since we do... I actually found it kind of funny.
Even with the slight mishap, I would still reccommend them. I doubt something like my mishap happens often.Need a new Web Host?

Check out www.Netdepot.com as well. They are owned by Gnax and we have been with them for a few years now. Their support is there and the network is very solid. They have a Duo Core 3.4Ghz for $159/mo I believe. But right now, they are running a special when you can get that same Duo Core for $105/mo if you pay a setup fee of maybe $150. Which is definitely worth it.
