That is a surprise. That site been around for a long while. I wonder if they let the domain expire or if they did it by accident. I'll look out for an equivalent site for you though.

Registered with RegisterFly... there's the reason why it expired right there.

Haha! I haven't seen one good thing about registerfly. Yeah, I'm a webhost. The only reason I didn't know about registerfly is because I only deal with quality providers!

Nope, it's DSL as in "Run your own webserver from home on DSL or Cable!"

The site was (hopefully will still be) a very good resource for people trying to host from home.

Ah, interesting. (I was wondering what it was, too, as I had never heard of it before!) Did they provide software, or just a how-to guide?

Interesting --- I wonder why they let it go, if it was so popular?

I have to agree, it was a realy useful site. I also wonder if they let it go deliberately or if it was registerflys fault for not notifying them of an impending expiration.

The domain expired Dec 10 and the whois info is plugged with the registerfly "protectfly" contact info. So you know this is just one more of the thousands that got stuck in the RF "transfer/renewal" mess.

Some more hints that might help some of you stuck in this mess. If your page is hosted elsewere, you can bypass the domain name by giving out your ip based url. That will be as simple as just your server ip loke http://0.0.0.0/ (if you have your own ip) or something like http://0.0.0.0/~user/. It ain't pretty, but your site should be fully functional. Or pick up a temporary new domain name and redirect it to your server. Of course you have to get the word out, bad if you depend on search engine created sales. Where was your emergency plan to start with?

Remember, the domain name was only created to be more human friendly, eliminate typing numbers and dots ;-) And create a great new land grab opportunity, you know, out of every 100 names, one is in real use, the other 99 waiting with for sale pages to be sold for big money.

I notice some webpages are now only using an ip address, cuts out a whole layer of processing.

I expect it will be back - it was a good resource and presumably a money-earner through the Google Ads.

Meanwhile the Wayback machine seems to have a lot of it:

Good! It would have been a shame if this was the end of it.
