Powervps to be or not to be....

    H all

Just making this post as i need opinions. I have had a vps server from powervps.com for 3 months, the package i have it LINUX CPANEL POWER-1
$44.50 per month, And i have a site monitoring service from www.siteuptime.com
And keep recieving emails to say my server is down, My statistics are here: http://www.siteuptime.com/statistics...&&UserId=58295

And even when i try to reboot the vps it doesnt, or when it does ( very rare ) it give me constant errors are apache or something else wont start.
My website is new so theres very little activaty on there at the minute, so what im asking is, is it time to get up and move to another provider, do you think the service im recieving is right for the price, or do you just think im trrying to get something for nothing sort of speech.

If its time to leave, who would you recommend?

    look forward to your opnions,

    Thanks
    steve

Basically 256mb memory isn't enough to run cPanel properly. My advice would be to either heavily tweak it or buy more memory/upgrade.

    ?

Buy more memory? i dont use hardly any, like i say there really isnt much activity on the vps so that should be fine,

I'd contract powervps and see what they have to say...

Have you checked in VZ? Even if you have no sites on the server cPanel alone uses up about 256mb which in your case is everything you've got.

    Hi

    Hi VT6

Yeah i have heard of this, but to be truthful, if 256mb isnt enough, why would they do or sell it as a service?

Personally I see little point in a server, dedicated or virtual with less than 512mb.

Memory is so cheap now why settle for 256 ?

Host sell 256mb because most customers put price before service.

    Hi!
Please post the output of these two commands...and we'll go from there.

    1) cat proc/user_beancounters

    2) ps axfuw

Both commands..logged in as root..and cd .. out of the "root" directory.

With this..we might be able to figure out what to do.

you guys just scared me to death. I was going to buy a 256 memory vps from liquidweb or another. If i get 256 and use the entire 200 bandwidth, am I frying my stuff?

no its not that so much.... I think its because alot of people just don't have $50+ a month to spend on a VPS.. We have to put price in high priority, because we do web design "not for profit" (or at least alot of people do if you want a successful website these days) so when its your money out of your own personal checking account, $20 or $50 monthly makes all the difference.. It means the difference between putting food on my kids table one night, or not...

The 256meg plans are so cheap nowadays, I've seen them in the $20,30 range.. To get 512, and thats the very minimum nowadays, you have to pay as much as you would a full blown server, which s the part I really don't like about VPSing.. I've even seen cpanel Virtuozzo VPS's run on as little as 128mb (although I don't see cpanel being that strip down able hehe)

but yeah like take powerVPS for instance, to get 256 is $40 a month, but to get 512 you have to pay almost $90 a month, thats a BIG jump.. Thats what I'm saying that I think is stupid.. I don't mind paying for better support, but, I don't want to pay double for more memory when cpanel needs it, thats just stupid if you ask me, something like that they should be giving you at no charge and charging extra for support, not the other way around.

What I mean is, when your control panel needs more memory for whatever it needs to run the actual website in the background, they should give that to you complimentary.. I mean, I don't see a problem with 256 guaranteed RAM, because the maximum allowed is always much more then that, but the minimum amount should run the users control panel, if it doesn't, then THAT is what the hosting provider should provide complimentary, because like I found out on my host today, causes problems more then anything, esp when yer installing something.. I've seen cpanel services crash while your not even IN cpanel at all. I mean that right there should be complimentary..

    Hi

Im with Powervps, I originally went with the 256mb plan, I upgraded to 512mb, you apparently get more CPU and Ram, so everything runs better

All I can say.. dont waste ya money with 256mb unless you know what your doing and strip out some stuff

Maybe its there severs as mine is crap now, and they cant move me to another.. so im off

    Regards

    Keith

    Forget price.

Know your requirement and then get the best deal you can.

If you need 512mb don't complain when you get 256mb and its not working as you expected.

A small thing called "profit" has to be made by all hosting companies, people expect the earth for $40 per month - its just not going to happen.

You can keep on dreaming all you like, its just not going to happen.

If you can't afford it get something else you can afford.

If you have sites that does more than nothing on a CPanel VPS, you need at least 384MB of min Ram.

If you are hosting clients and are getting paid for it, 512 is the bare minimum.

That's absolutely not true. cPanel in idle state with all standard services running takes up about 120mb ram. Running several sites on a cPanel VPS with 256mb ram will not be a problem, provided that the sites in question aren't as big as google.com, obviously.

You should also be able to host a production environment on 256mb ram without any problem at all, provided that you do not constantly burst over the guaranteed amount of ram (most VPS providers allow a certain amount of ram bursting over the ram guarantee). As long as you use a proper provider (e.g. not a provider that oversells more than what they guarantee) and don't use more ram than what's guaranteed, there won't be any problem at all.

Also, you can't compare a $100 dedicated server with a VPS, considering that a VPS typically comes with a certain amount of management, runs on a (high-end) raid array, offers burst capabilities, etc. In a lot of cases, when choosing between a VPS and a low-end dedicated server of the exact same price, it's better to choose the VPS (note that I'm not saying all cases - there are exceptions). Just because a dedicated server is stand-alone doesn't necessarily make it the better choice, there's much more to it.

Yes, but I wouldn't say "it's absolutely no true".

My point being that more any considerable amount of activity is too much for a 256MB ram VPS. That from my own experience of using many 256MB VPS' in the past, I just wouldn't recommend it to other fellow users.

Sure, and I wouldn't recommend hosting google.com on a single server either. It completely depends on what you call "a considerable amount". We have hundreds of customers running cPanel on a 256mb RAM VPS with significant amount of pageviews/related activities and they all never have problems with their account - so I definitely stand by my statement that "it's absolutely not true" that cPanel can't run properly on a production VPS with 256mb guaranteed ram.

If you wanted to strip Cpanel down, and I must admit I think Cpanel runs slowely (I'm a happy powervps customer) how would you do this (I'm a n00b) when it comes to this sort of thing btw.

    Thanks,

I'm also seeking the answer to this question as the fact that I would lose my support if I require a removal of cPanel.

    Thanks,

Also, you can't compare a $100 dedicated server with a VPS, considering that a VPS typically comes with a certain amount of management, runs on a (high-end) raid array, offers burst capabilities, etc. In a lot of cases, when choosing between a VPS and a low-end dedicated server of the exact same price, it's better to choose the VPS (note that I'm not saying all cases - there are exceptions). Just because a dedicated server is stand-alone doesn't necessarily make it the better choice, there's much more to it.
CPanel in an idle state uses no resources. Its a bundle of scripts that are invoked through cron jobs or by issuing small commands to it which in turn run scripts that execute many prewritten commands. It only makes shorter work of administration on the services that would be running on the server whether cpanel was loaded into it or not. Saying cpanel uses a lot of memory is like saying Fantastico uses a ton of memory. It might when you install a script, but no more that manually inputting the number of commands it takes in the same amount of time that Fantastico does it in.

Also just because all 256mb of ram are being used doesn't mean there isn't enough RAM. Here's a server doing absolutely nothing "using" 300MB of RAM:

    top - 22:50:02 up 57 min, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.00
    Tasks: 118 total, 1 running, 117 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
    Cpu(s): 0.5% us, 0.6% sy, 0.0% ni, 98.5% id, 0.4% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
    Mem: 2074924k total, 321004k used, 1753920k free, 41900k buffers
    Swap: 4008164k total, 0k used, 4008164k free, 105000k cached

When it starts using swap is when you need to add RAM. VPS's suck - always have always will. An empty vps doing nothing is sluggish and slow right out of the box, they are an utter waste of good hardware, and a rip off to the consumer of the end product, with a terrible profit margin to the provider who now admins 24 or 36 servers for 5 or ten bucks a month each instead of one server for $1000 and the people on the one server get to make use of all the resources if needed, and 95% of the time can use what they need.

Show me a $100 dedicated server that can compete with the level of management and features that most managed vps servers have, and I'll show you a pig that can fly. If you really desire a dedicated server that can live up to the management and features of a vps server with at least 512 of ram, then you will be paying no less than $200/mo if it's truly "managed".
