offering reseller plans as a reseller myself

I have a reseller account. I was wondering if as a reseller I can offer reseller accounts to customers. Do you know how this works and if this kind of setup makes sense or not?
    Thanks.

Actually, it's a really good way to start into webhosting without spending a huge amount of investment dollars on servers and support, when your customers just want larger accounts with multiple domains and a reseller interface -- in fact, that's how we started out in the beginning before moving up on dozens of our own servers

I would choose a company that offers private label reseller accounts, so that you can just provide them the information your host gives you after you signup for an account yourself. Basically, just place as many reseller account orders for your own billing account, and send your end-users a customized version of the welcome email your host gives you. Although they likely won't give support to these customers, you can ask any questions you can't answer yourself to your host. We have several customers that do this, and so far they find it a good way to expand from just simple shared accounts on a single reseller

A warning though, your host can have a heart attack when you ultimately place cancellation requests on all of them when you decide to expand to full-blown servers... I still remember that day, years ago

    Good luck!

The best was to do this is to get a VPS. That will allow you to easily sell both reseller accounts and regular web hosting accounts to your customers.

    Disadvantages of a VPS:

-Higher Cost -> you pay upfront for the server with all necessary features (such as cp, skins or other goodies) as additional paid services

-Unused space/bandwidth -> unless you already have a sufficiently large client base, many of the resources you pay for may go to waste

-Self-management -> your customers need to be fully supported by you, and your VPS provider will likely not know how to provide basic support for end-user type environments. Asking your VPS provider questions like 'can you transfer an account for me' would come back with a negative response in most cases

-Potential for bankruptcy -> your revenue is initially much lower than expenses, so in the short term if you don't succeed, you can lose money monthly

    Advantages of a VPS:
+Better than managing a dedicated server -> you still don't need to know anything about OS's, system configs, security features or other technical items, as most VPS providers are at least semi-managed or managed

+ All your customers are in one place, and you have root access -> you don't need to memorize the dozens of potentially different server IPs of your reseller accounts to help customers. You don't need to wait for your host to respond to fix trivial issues

+Greater flexibility -> install the software and addons you want, without relying on your host. For example, if you want the latest mysql 5 and php 5 versions with eaccelerator, this is all possible even if your reseller host does not provide this.

+Lower your bp -> sometimes it can be frustrating when your host decides to schedule maintenance on reseller servers in peak hours or some other disaster. With a VPS, such maintenance is less likely and you're usually in control with your own ability to diagnose issues and know what's wrong instead of relying on third party information.

Although not comprehensive, hopefully that helps!

I think you can sell reseller hosting by using RVSKIN, if your control panel is CPanel .

But not all host will have that feature enabled. You can always sell reseller accounts and it just really depends on your current host's setup and whether you are ready to support your client's client (not directly but indirectly)?

Look for a host using our software, WHMreseller. It will let you setup reseller accounts under your own reseller account.

I agree with this. RVSkin's sub-reseller integration works great if the reseller has this option enabled. If you really want to sell reseller plans, than I would suggest a dedicated or VPS. PolurNet clearly discribes the pro's and cons in the above post. You decide if its worth it to you.

    Possible with DotNetPanel

I think this is possible with DotNetPanel control panel. But you require a Windows server for this purpose. I found that DotNetPanel has more features than any other windows based hosting control panels.

    Anand!

    Hi

Checkout Helm 4 Control Panel (www.webhostautomation.com)
This allows unlimited sub reseller levels. I recommend this control panel for sub reselling!

This is a Windows Hosting Control Panel.

WHMReseller does work great and allows you to concentrate on sales and marketing and not PHP recompiles and Cpanel updates...when starting out and staffing is thin (probably just you) it is best to put your energy and focus into growing your business and reputation

I had heard WHMreseller is quite buggy, but that was sometime ago. Maybe it has been improved on since then.

Maybe it`s just me, but I just don`t like the idea of sub reseller accounts being added to a main reseller account on a shared server. Just seems like the amount of domains being placed on one server would be huge and potential for problems.

Honestly, if you want to sell reseller accounts, get your own server/s

I dont think sub-resellers are the way to go, and certainly doing this on a VPS isnt recommended...

reseller customers need to be take very seriously - they are a very important market segment and they are at a critical phase of business development. If you are offering this via sub reseller accounts or on a VPS, you should make the client aware of this ahead of time (obviously this wont happen, but, its the right thing to do regarldless)

WHMReseller was fine but very basic at V-1, V-2 had its initial issues but has been fine since. Not everyone has the funding or resources to go straight to a server or the expertise to handle that or a VPS....

The buyer needs to beware for if a company goes the overselling route with this software it will go to hell in a handbasket real quick...Far greater percentage of resources are used than a standard reseller since it has multiple resellers under the same allowances. And of course the provider needs to have a sense of responsibility and restraint (It CAN happen...LOL).

But, under the proper set of circumstances this is a great alternative for the provider to address a different market and a buyer to test the waters without wasting what may be limited capital.

    Follow Up

As the developers of WHMreseller we will look at further ways to restrain some hosts who may be using the software irresponsibly.

We'll most likely introduce a kind of load/resource monitor in the software to prevent hosts from creating more Sub Resellers when the server is clearly overloaded. We will look into this more, should be released in the next update.

Right now we are going through a phase of putting more "idiot proofing" in the software (no offense intended). So all such concerns should be addressed in the next release v2.4
