Comical Domain Reg Error

A rather comical domain registration error occured for a friend of mine recently. He refuses to use his credit card online to purchase anything. So he calls the companies directly to pay on the phone. He recently registered 5 domain names. On one of the domains they messed up and put his entire credit card number as the domain name. example: 2547XXXXXXXXXXXXXX .com. Needless to say he did not think this was very funny. Can it get worse than that?...All someone would have to do is a whois search and they would have his full name, address & phone number. The company appologized and cancelled the name, and he has cancelled his credit card. I just thought this was comical for a person who tries so hard to keep credit card offline, to have his entire credit card number dedicated as a domain name.

I still don't understand why some people would think using credit cards OVER THE PHONE is safer than doing that ONLINE. I do just the opposite: I almost NEVER (less than 3 occasions in 10 years) give out my credit card over the phone.

By the way, which registrar are we talking about here?

Hi nameslave, I'm going to hold off on mentioning the registrar for now. They have been helpful for both of us in the past, so posting them would almost be giving them a bad rap. Something like this should not have happened, i'm not sure how they messed this up, but yes it is pretty bad.

When it comes to using your credit card online, you are pretty safe as long as you don't have a trojan or a keylogger on your computer. My friend suspects that he has a trojan on his computer, so that is his primarly reason he does not feel safe. Although in his case, he probably wouldn't put his credit card online even on a 100% clean pc. He is stubborn when it comes to that.

Believe it or not, there's at least one registrar who accepts registrations via check.
And I mean the traditional check or cheque, not really sure what's the right one.

But...they won't process it 'til the check clears.

Just an option your friend might want to consider if s/he's really that insistent on
not using a credit card to pay for the domain name registration.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will be sure to mention it to him. With his luck they will end up registering his bank account #.com.
