A second Python 2.5, or Python 2.5 in addition to a previous version such as Python 2.4?
If the latter, generally you just make install. You might have to check / delete / create symlinks to the version of Python you want to be predominant on your boxen. Bear in mind I use nothing but FreeBSD but with that proviso:
Installing a second, different, version of Python will leave you with:
Or something approximating that. Python customizations and installed packages will be specific to each version - if you need something installed in 2.4 you'll have to rerun the setup for 2.5.
/usr/local/bin/python -> python2.5 symlink
When maintaining similar install trees of Python, installing / updating a package might look like this:
Now that I've banged all this out you'll probably inform me that you really want two seperate and independent python2.5's installed but I'll wait for that before typing further.
python2.4 setup.py install
... and ...
python2.5 setup.py install
