I'm doing a little research today. I'm looking into MediaTemple's Grid Server offering. I see they are experiencing lots of performance problems with this service.
Is anyone here using a gs plan to host a large forum?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on how this is going. I'm particularly interested in how many GSUs you are accumulating in a month of operation. I assume that you can't host a large forum for $20/month, but their hosting plan is advertised to be "infinitely" scalable. The plan comes with 1000 GSUs in a month and bills overages at 10 cents a GSU. They don't advertise any way to "throttle" a plan so you can cap your monthly hosting charges. I'm worried about running up a huge hosting bill for an active forum and have no idea what kind of resources 1000 GSUs gives me and how many overage GSUs an active forum will take.
Any direct experiences here? Or, is the performance such that the gs can't handle large PHP/MySQL application therefore making the issue of overages moot?
Sorry for bugging you, but I just don't want you to make a mistake and host with them. ASA they've got their server stable, you might wanna try it out but from what I've been reading and experiencing with sites hosted on GS, they just err.... suck.
The GSU monitoring and tracking isn't implemented yet for the end user anywhere in the control panel. So any of us that have sites there have no idea where we're at in terms of the GSU usage, hopefully it'll be implemented with this grid 1.1 update they're working on.
