Is it safe to use kernels from external sources such as this? (Security wise?)

http://glitesoft.cern.ch/cern/slc4X/...3.EL.cern.html

They have the RPM kernel package with the drivers (Areca) which I need.

If you are looking for a kernel upgrade from yum I would use see if you can get on from centos or compile one from scratch

the vanilla kernel does not come with the Areca driver.

I don't know how to compile the driver for my Areca raid card for my new kernel so I'm thinking of sticking to this solution.

The instructions given by Areca in the README file is really.. -ignts-
