    Xeon 3060 vs Opteron 175 vs Pentium D 950

Opinions on which is the better choice? This is basically the SoftLayer entry lineup. All three are 64 bit, dual core, 1GB RAM.

    Xeon 3060, 2.4Ghz, 1x4MB cache, 1GB DDR2 RAM

    Opteron 175 2.2Ghz, 2x1MB cache, 1GB DDR1 RAM

    Pentium D 950, 3.4Ghz, 2x2MB cache, 1GB DDR2 RAM

They all have the same monthly price, so I was hoping people might have some suggestions for how to choose.

Personally I would go for the Xeon 3060 which is Core2Duo part. A site you might find handy is

Thanks for the responses guys. That CPU comparison page is a great resource as well.

A bit of searching revealed that the Opteron 175 is effectively an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo, so I was able to see on the comparison page that the C2D really does have a significant performance advantage over the others.

    So, C2D it is.

    Hey netbert,

Thanks for this post I was looking for a new server tonight and just picked up the new Xeon chip you guys spoke about from SoftLayer. My box was ready in about 1 and a half hours. We're just about ready to load test it! I'll let you know how it works.
