    Have you looked at top output? What is the highest process showing?

    If it is MySQL, install mytop and check that out. If you need your MySQL optimized, I think there are many companies that charge a low price for that.

    Best bet would be to look at your httpd traffic and see whats going on, your ps output isn't really complete try getting a full ps output and paste it

    ps auxfwww

    Just looking at that, I see httpd possibly being the problem but that can draw some speculation, lot of traffic, exploitation, bots who knows. Check mysql status often

    >mysql

    show status;

    Or install mytop

    That's actually a very good server load. Memory usage will always be high, regardless of how many sites you have on a server. A high memory usage is indicative of absolutely nothing wrong.

    HellO!

    I have traced a MySQL process that was on 102% and the below is the result!

    Process 21977 attached - interrupt to quit
    select(5, [3 4], NULL, NULL, NULL) = 1 (in [4])
    fcntl64(4, F_SETFL, O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK) = 0
    accept(4, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=@}, [2]) = 26

    That is a simple strace which shows nothing other than mysql checking that the socket is still there.

    What does,

    mysql -e 'status';

    return.

    Try stop mysql and see if server load goes down. Also run

    show processlist

    on Mysql command prompt.

    You seem to run out of RAM. Server going down may be the effect of that. You system gets slow once you start swapping, load rises, request com in eating up ever more RAM and you end up in a vicious cycle.

    What kinf of HDs do you have?
    Who partitioned your HD?
    The reson I am asking is this (emphasis added):

    For mysql: install mytop, keep it running and your shell open until you see a high load period or a crash. Usually it is very easy to see the process/users causing the issue.
