I just switched from Clientexec to modernbill 2 months ago..... Both are outstanding, but I am glad I switched... I would highly recommend browsing the demos for the "mainstream" billing/client management scripts, or doing a trial of each one to see which you like the best.... Everyone is different

    ClientExec since early 2.x

They just came out with 2.8.0 and it seems like every new version since 2.7.0 has been outstanding. Every single one has a new feature I use and I've submitted at least five feature requests to them: three were done within two releases, two are pending for the next major release.

We used number of spreadsheets for long time for doing all billing and storing contact information. We stated with invoice number 1 and not we are way up in the thousands. Recently we got QuickBooks premier and there is customer manager app included with it and we are in the process of slowly switching to it. So far the thing looks great and it is worth every dollar we spent for it. Highly recommended.

Quickbooks and Customers Manager 2 (it sync with QB). It's a contact manager with a lot of good features.
