i just priced out a Dell Dimension E521 for about $600 with AMD 64 x2 dual core and 1gb ram. it's powerful and whole lot cheaper than their server. Would you colo a Dell PC/Workstation as a server? will there be any performance hit or problem?
p.s. i have a Dell Dimension Intel CoreDuo2 at the office. it's very quite and pretty fast. almost as fast as our server at the office.
It's done all of the time. I would dare to say that 80% of "servers" in the market are not servers, they are desktops, which is really absolutely fine.
"It's fine" is a relative term, it depends on the target market for the server. Given that they are desktops and the components are not engineered for 24/7 operation and generally have a much lower MTBF you would still want to stay away from deploying desktop grade hardware for anything but budget servers.
MTFB on a desktop is now 5 years, servers were usually 10 years, which is beyond their technology value, anyway. I have some 10 year old compaq's still humming along, but they ain't worth a @*%&* to anybody. I actually wish they would MTFB on me, and just commit suicide.
