i am not sure if this is the right thread, so please redirect me if its not. I am looking to move from Bluehost to a dedicated server (probably EV1). i need someone who can do the following: set up the server, migrate the site and maintain all of the nessesary task on the server side (patches, securities etc). I have been reading a lot about seekadmin and Tris and impressed with the reviews. However i would like to get your opinions in terms of should i get a sys admin, pay him for couple of hours of work to set up the server and eventually move the site, and then pay on the per needed basis. I dont anticipate major development on my site or any big changes. The site is written in php and x-cart. Seekadmin seems to be great idea, but for now a bit costy for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
What i would like to do is set up the Unix server, properly configure apache server, migrate my site over to it from Bluehost. After that, I would need a guy/gal to be working with me on a per/problem basis. i.e. once in a while log in and see that everything is going well in terms of Database, perform update patches, securites etc. If i need to install additional modules or something he/she should be able to do it. And of course in case of emergency i would want him to be able to address the problem asap.
Your server will have any control panel or not? Configuring a server without any CP will take a bit more and require more knowlage to add mails, domains, etc.
my only reservation about Cpanel (or any other gui admin tool) is that they are all hackable. However, I realize that using one, would reduce the time and effort and frankly I am willing to learn it myself as well. So yes, i would have one of those tools.
Thanks much for your suggestions and replies. Bluehost offered to upgrade me to a "higher cpu" machine and presumably it will make things a bit better on my end. Plus exploring all the possible downsides of moving the site during the holiday period had made me postpone it until the january. I want to see if Bluehost's solution will work for me. I would definetly want to move and be independent but after the holiday season.
