Question the cheapest .com registrar (preferably free)

I know it sounds like a stupid question and I know there will be catches etc.

I just want control of an available .com for a week or so, who can tell me the cheapest registrar?

so far i have netfirms at $4.95

are there any firms like namezero.com anymore who give domains away with catches?

    Uh.

You don't want to risk your domain name over a few dollars. If its that big of a deal, then you can't afford a website.

With that said, Yahoo! Small Business offers domains for $2.95 - good luck getting it back when they steal it, though.

Any respected registrar is best: GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc. They charge more, but it shouldn't be that much of a problem to shell out less than $10 for the rights to a domain for a year, even if you do only plan on using it for a few weeks at most. When you're done, you'll also have the right to sell it to somebody else.

Yahoo small business has $1.99 registrations for new customers. If you're just looking for a throw-away domain then Yahoo would probably be an acceptable option.

Hey guys, thanks for the reply.

Sure, probably didnt make it clear, this is a throw away domain.

I'd be more than willing to part with $1.99 but yahoo seem to want to charge me $9.99 on their site at http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/

Any ideas why this might be?

I wouldn't trust anybody without a brand name these days. I've heard too many stories of cheap registrars withholding your domain name for themselves if it gets to much traffic.

Make sure to read their TOS and Privacy Policy. Those are always fun reads

Moist towelette, he meant he needed for a week or so, so credentials are useless here.

AND it's almost impossible to transfer away (you'll get no EPP code from them; in order to get it, you'll spend so much time, that difference of few dollars will be nothing).

This option is nNot for the novices.
