Cisco 3550 gbic
We have a cisco 3550 switch with 2 cisco ws-g5483 1000baseT gbic modules.
If we connect a cat5 cable into the gbic port ,the port shows down.
Should it be a cat6 cable?
No, Cat 5 should be fine. Are you connecting a switch to another switch? If so, you may want to use a crossover cable.
I believe those GBIC's actually do auto-crossover when necessary.

i have the following setup:
cisco 3550 -gbic module -cat5 cable (no cross) - laptop 100mbit port
So my solution would be to get cat5E cable and/or is it possible that it doesnt work because my laptop hasnt got a 1000mbit port?
That's the problem; GBICs are by definition gigabit only. The switch should spit out an error if you try to configure it for any lower speed.

we've connected fiber and copper gbics to cisco 3550 gbic ports without any problem. And we've also set it for 100mbps as opposed to gigE before without problem as well. The cable may be the issue if it's a bad cable. But a short distance and even cat5 non-E should work.
Cneck if you are getting any errors when you do a show interface gigE
SFP and GBIC don't work at 100mbps. The speed maybe able to be set at 100mbps, but there will be no communications.
