as said above, express edition is free. Before you install make sure you have .net framework 2.0 installed and MSXML 6.0 as well.

Have you installed the lates service pack for you OS as it suggests?

The win OS is just a skeleton without the service pack :d. Installing the latest SP is a must for windows servers.

FYI: Uninstall .NET Framework 1.2 and later versions from your computer (versions 1.0 and 1.1 do not have to be uninstalled). Then, install .NET Framework 2.0. from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en and then Install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition from the http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...l/default.aspx

If you are going to offer any kind of Microsoft platform as a hosted service Win2003, SQL, etc..., you need Service Provider Licensing from Microsoft, FYI. http://www.microsoft.com/serviceprov...g/default.mspx

It's relatively cheap starting out. No need to spend thousands on software, just a monthly usage fee based on users, servers, and processors. This way you can use a full-blown SQL server without the huge cost, and it's legal.

I am running sql2005 Xpress edition with 2003 without facing trouble...

Remember xpress edition is the free version but you can't extend db size more than 1 Gb.

Any company providing hosting to clients using typical commercial licensing with Microsoft is running it against the terms. You must use SPLA.

You will need to install SP1 for Windows Server 2003 first.

Then make sure you have .NET framework 2.0 installed, and SQL Express should install without issue.
