Xeon or Opteron, dual or dual-core?

I'm shopping for a dedicated server.
Given these 4 options for a high-performance web server, what would you choose?

    1) Dual Xeon Irwindale 3.0GHz (2 x 2MB cache)

    2) Dual Opteron 248 - 2.2GHz (2 x 1MB cache)

    3) Single Xeon Woodcrest- 2.0GHz (2 x 2MB cache)

    4) Single Opteron 2212 - 2.0GHz (2 x 1MB cache)

Can you point to any benchmarks to substantiate your preference?

    Thanks for your feedback!

    Is cost a concern?

These four options have close to equal costs at DCs I have checked.

My own benchmarks show that, clock for clock, Woodcrest is 25-30% faster than current Opterons and 80-100% faster than Pentium D (which should be essentially the same as Irwindale).

Take a look at the SpecInt2000 figures at - which doesn't seem to be working right now. The Woodcrests can really move.

Easy, Woodcrest, or the Core 2 Duo.

I just have a couple notes:

    1) Putting the 2212 in a single CPU setup is a waste of money, unless you need the room for expansion. You would want the Opteron 1212.

    2) The Woodcrest is actually not 2x 2MB, that would indicate 2MB of cache per core. It is in fact just a shared 4MB cache, which, in many cases, is better.

    3) The Core 2 Duo performs just as well, if not better than, the Woodcrests and at a lower price. I was testing the E6600 vs. a Woodcrest 5130, so the Core 2 Duo did have an advantage in clock speed, but that put both at the same cache. Also, even with that setup the Core 2 Duo is cheaper, and uses less power.
