Hi i am thinking of using Joomla for a little project of mine.
Could someone tell me how secure it is, any experiences from using it?
I heard it has a load of holes and backdoors etc, is this true?

you don't to do much. just get all updates. you have to watch for components. only use the most popular. anyways joomla 1.5 will be out soon. it is nice.

but is it generally safe?? or is there a load of issues all the time and people getting hacked?

Not really, if you talk about components. But all you need is just a security in place on your server (e.g. mod_security) to stop attacks on vulnerable components.
