How to connect a Storage Server

I have a db server and a web server. If I were to introduce a storage server in the mix how would I connect it? Do I connect it to the web server in a private lan and then create a share?

That seems too simple. Will the storage server's power (dual cpu, 2gb ram, etc) be fully utilized through the share? What if the share is really a web share (files to be made publicly accessible online)? How would I exposure the share under the web server root? I'm a bit confused.
