Any management company is reliable working without panels?

    Hello,

I have a dedicated server which doesn't have any panel, it shouldn't need it because it only hosts basically one website. A popular server management company do the server management but they have several issues not fixed since aproximately a week and I'm remembering them to fix the issues every day. I told them that if they can work better with webmin or other free panel then they can install it.

    BTW the issues are:
    - CGI's not running (the weird thing is that they upload a simple "hello world" perl script and it works but I download the script and reupload in ASCII and with the same CHMOD and it doesn't work).
    - HTML pages can't show spanish characters, only if I convert ANSII to HTML. This is something that I haven't needed to do in the rest servers that I used.

So I'm wondering if server management companies are reliable working without panels, in fact I don't know any other reliable company which work without panels.

PD: Obviously the company can know which case is that but I don't want to say the company, they are still on time to improve and have a good final review (or even without a final)

Problem just "fixed"! The auto option of my client was uploading in ASCII, I have also tried with manual option in ASCII but now I have try with Binary and now it works

Anyway is so weird because CGI's should be transfered as ASCII

The problem is Windows and Linux text editors handle return characers and linefeed characters differently (Windows adds extra characters when saving text files), and if the files aren't transferred correctly, linux can't process the file properly.

Finally I fixed thanks to your info just changing the format to UNIX instead of PC in EditPlus.

BTW, do you know how to fix the Unicode/Ansi issue? I mean that the html pages don't show spanish characters unless I convert Ansi to html in each html file. I have never need to do that in all the servers I have ever used

You don't need to be an "expert" with a panel.

Without a panel you need a company who knows what its doing and this costs money.

Anyway does anyone have had a good experience with any 3rd management company server mananing a server without panel?

By the moment I have had three issues: 1st one took several days to be fixed, the second had to be fixed by me after several days and the 3rd one is opened since 10 days ago!

    I would strongly recommend SeeksAdmin.com.
I also have no cPanel (I don't need it), but they met all my needs / demands within very short time. Also, what I really appreciate is that they have great follow up. It's not hit-and-run, but they also do check ups afterwords.

So, SeeksAdmin is my best choice.

All I can say is that you should expect to pay much more for server management without a control panel.

@suhailc - I don't find that to be true. I have paid same ammount with SeeksAdmin without Control Panel.

Also, I belive that a real good admin does everything without GUI tools.

    Cheers,

I must second this, many management companies specialise in panels purely because they don't know how to do it without the panel, and if the panel doesn't have the option "It can't be done".

I personally think control panels get in the way of good administration and just break things so we try to use them only where absolutely necessary. Others disagree but that's my point of view...

I disagree. Good management companies hardly ever use the control panel except when necessary (to edit the settings of a user's account, etc). It is actually easier to take control of your environment without a control panel.

how about one which will manage a server using Webmin? Might make your search easier and Webmin is a nice tool!

"...in fact I don't know any other reliable company which work without panels."

Thats strange. If we are tlking about server management than the company MUST be able to do anything without Control panel.

If you havent found that yet, than you are asking for trouble. Search on WHT for companies providing administration hardening, troubleshooting etc. There have been MANY reviews lately. I could post some names, but as I dont have experience with them I would automatically collect some points from the WHT moderators - which I really am trying to avoid. ;-)

In my opinion, management is best when ur doing it manually i.e. without panels. I have 2 servers without panels, and i manage them myself, most of the time asking here and there on various irc channels/networks , forums, about security to apache/php and stuff like that. If a n00b like me can learn things like that than why not management companies. There must be some very good admins out there working at management companies.
