I think the specialists here need some more information about what you expect to happen with your future website. What space and bandwidth you need, where you want the server located etc etc etc.

Initially I would be looking for a high quality hosting provider, not someone with an outragious amount of bandwidth and space (by the time you'll actually need to use it, you'll need a dedicated box). Once you get the site going, and the traffic starts building up I would start looking at a dedicated server...something low end with a big hard drive. Image hosting sites are pretty easy to setup, the key is to get a provider than can give you fast speeds and reliability because people want their pictures loading fast and always up!

    Good luck with your site.

What programming language does it use?

You should think to buy a dedicated server. Most reliable and fast

The problem with this is initial cost, many people are afraid to put that much money into a site that might never go anywhere!

hey...I also need some recommendation for my image host. << removed >>
currently on a cheap cpanel reseller...planning to move as traffic catches up
not hijacking his thread, but my needs are same.
yes, startup costs should be minimal...and I'd grow as traffic starts to grow.

what about mediatemple's grid server ?
    any other suggestion, tips?

and the best of all, how to bring in the traffic (marketing)...if you guys help, it'd be great!

Agnivo007, there are many threads about MT on this forum, you may want to check them out.

To bring traffic to your site, the best, always is to SEO the site, and also, if you want/can exchange link with sites with related interests, like, for example, a forum, where their participants can host their "avatars" or signatures on your image hosting.
Also, free webmaster resources directories, and sites like that should help you.

As mentioned above, don't be looking for incredible bandwidth and disk space. Instead, look for fast servers, high speed downloads, and reliability. These will make your image hosting service very desirable.

Firstly you'll need to get test files from each host, after this you'll need to see sample sites on each host to see how quickly they load (CPU load). My advice is find someone with a fast internet connection to do this for you.

    Good luck!

Excellent advice! SEO is probably the biggest and best way.

DNS, why couldn't the OP just get a reliable shared solution until he/she actually needs a higher plan such as reseller or VPS. I would say a good stong shared plan would suit the needs just fine until the site becomes very very active.

obviously, reviews on the above would help you out a ton I am sure. If you are looking to compare speeds, check out http://www.hostingspeeds.com

Look for reviews on the above companies either here on WHT or various review sites like WHReviews.com

HostingSpeeds has been discussed over and over as being an incorrect way to measure speeds. I can simply create an html doc with 1 letter and it would beat out all the companies there, its not based on speeds, its based on how fast pages load, so the ones with the bigger pages are toward the bottom!

I think if you took two packages of the same size and placed on two different servers in different locations you would get a pretty good perception on how much faster one provider would be for you than the other. So I think to some degree, the files do help.

You will need a dedicated server for sure

Actually, what they did is against the rules. You can let the moderating team know who they are via http://www.webhostingtalk.com/helpdesk/
