Does anyone have a managed server AND an outside expert?

I've had a managed server with the same company for 3 years. Overall they are pretty good, uptime is excellent but their support has let me down a few times. The occasional problems are typical when you are dealing with a big company with large support staff, some are excellent and some are pretty crappy. Also although manage server companies promise to "manage" your server let's face it, you're just one of many. I've seen the same thing with different companies we've tried.

My server hosts many ecommerce sites so I can't afford to get spotty support
service and not knowing if my server is up to date with security.

I'm thinking of hiring an outside expert to harden and keep track of security, a go to person when we need quick help on other server issues, etc. Is anyone else doing this? If so does it ever cause a conflict between your managed support and your outside expert?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

You shouldn't have 2 teams/persons doing server management services on a single server. This might cause a lot of conflicts and none of them would take full responsability for actions done by the other one.

You might consider having a self-managed server and then hire a third party/company to handle full management of your server. Or, you can have a fully managed server, one with no-root access provided to you, so you can make sure they will take full responsability of your server.

    I agree with Apolo,

keep things with 1 person or one company.. not everyone has the same Technical opinions or hardening techniques..it varies

    Greetings:

We have a number of H-Sphere managed clients with Rackspace.com; while Rackspace.com does provide managed services, they do not support H-Sphere.

Therefore, it is possible to have both, as long as their are clearly defined boundaries of where one's work / responsibility starts, and ends.

    Thank you.

So in this case I believe it's considered an unmanaged service, isn't it?

I mean, in this case they will provide managed network & hardware, as most dedicated server providers do, but their managed (server/software) services don't apply here.

I use both. I use Liquidweb which is fully managed, their uptime is good, but sometimes their ticket support is too slow for my liking. So I use seeksadmin.com when I need things done in a jiffy. So far there have been no conflicts.

As long as both are responsible and know what they're doing, I don't see an issue with using more than 1 to fix issues.

Is LiquidWeb really that slow when it comes to support? I was thinking about picking up a dedicated server with them. It says they have a 2 hour response SLA, are they bad with resolution time?

    Thanks.

They take anywhere between 2 hours and 14 hours. The problem is you dont know when its going to take 14 hours.

If the response time is that slow, I think its better to go for a server management company like seeksadmin or rack911 to get a fast fix.
