What does one do about the age restriction on car rentals? Budget and Avis which are at the air ports have a 25 age limit in chicago.

All of them have such charges or limits, but there are ways around them

Unless you really need it for some reason, there's no real reason to rent a car if you're coming into Chicago for HostingCon 2007. You can take the Airport Express shuttles for around $50 round trip, I believe. They'll take you right from O'Hare to your hotel and then pick you back up at your hotel and take you back to O'Hare. If you're flying into Midway I believe they operate there as well.
If you rent a car you're going to end up paying quite a bit to park it in the city. Pretty much every hotel charges to park there... it's usually $30-35 a day. Some of them have in and out priveleges, some don't.
In general when you're going to a big city like Chicago, New York, etc. unless you need it cause you're going on long siteseeing trips, you're better off just taking public/semi-private transportation such as airport shuttles, the bus, the train, or taxis. You usually end up saving money in the long run.

I used to only pay $10/day surcharge through National with AMEX Platinum card. However, they no longer have this discount and wanted to charge me $25/day to rent extra. Enterprise was only $15/day and was also $25/day cheaper on the actual rental itself.

Who says the only reason I'll be going to chicago is for hostingcon? I may not be able to make it again.

Sure, but he's right..its much easier to take cabs or the bus/ train lines. between fighting for parking and the fees, its a pain.

You could try to check all of the agencies listed: http://www.ohare.com/ohare/ground_tr...nd_rental.shtm But most of them probably conform to the age limits unfortunately. Exploring a city by foot / public transportation can be enjoyable as well, it worked out great for us in Vegas / FL for trips. Perhaps call the hotel you're going to be staying at and see if the concierge can assist you as well?

Odd. I've used rentals cars from Enterprise Rentals, and im 22. Maybe could have been because, i used my military I.D and License. Im not sure that could be the reason.

If your original post was not about going to HostingCon, it shouldn't have been made in this forum. One (such as myself) should be able to safely assume that when someone asks a question about renting cars in Chicago in the HOSTINGCON forum that the question was related to attending HostingCon, no?

I think the key word was only. As you know, a lot of people who travel to attend conferences do so in part because it gives them a chance to do some sightseeing and have a bit of a vacation at the same time. You choose conference destinations in part because of their destination appeal, right?

Lois, I understand that... which is why my original reply said something to the effect of "unless you're going to do sightseeing that requires a car." If you read his reply, please note the phrase "I may not be able to make it again." This leads me to believe he was indeed talking about going to Chicago for something else.

I never said It was not related. I said "Who says the only reason I'll be going to chicago is for hostingcon?" which any logical think would think, oh hes going to do other business besides hosting con.
I have other business to attend to in Chicago besides hostingcon. Its either attend that business or go to hostingcon, and I have to pick the other business.
