Most "secure" Web Hosting?
I have a friend who has a site that some people would like him to take down. (it is not pornography or anything like that.)
Every couple of months, the other party will send his host letters and they will shut the site down even though it is complete B.S.
Is there a way to set up a host so that people can't get you shut down like that? Maybe a deticated server or something like that? I don't know too much about computers but I was just curious.
Thanks

What kind of content does your friend host? Is it something politically motivated?

He posts a bunch of stuff about a company, which they claim is confidential material even though the court has already ruled against the company. Their lawyers bully the hosts he uses and they just shut him down.
I really don't want to get into the middle of this, he was just telling me his frustration and I was curious.

This is a difficult area.
0) Your friend should check his original motivation and evaluate if its really worth getting into trouble for it.
1) If it is a offensive or controversal topic, you better get professional legal advice and prepare any documents to backup your statements.
2) If it is confidential material then he probably shouldnt be posting it on the web.
3) Even if it is not confidential it might not be "appropriate" to be posted in the public.
4) Its a question of how long his host will stand the pressure from those complaining and how good your friend is prepared to prove anything he is stating on his homepage. Even your own box might not help.
5) An option might be to move the contents, documents out of the country. Note that depending which country you are hosting in other rules might apply.
6) Another option might be to distribute the info in a different format.
7) You should keep several copies of the material.Last edited by valentin_nils; 11-04-2006 at 06:38 AM.

Use a host in a juristiction where the company has no business. It would be more complicated (and expensive) for them to get lawyers involved if they don't already have lawyers there.
One of the problems with hosting is that hosts are very vulnerable legally if they are notified that they are hosting 'illegal' content. They have to close the site without checking whether the content is actually illegal or not. It means that big companies can succeed by host bullying far more than they ever would if they actually went to Court.

8) Carefully evaluate if and how you want the public to be involved.
Did your friend discuss with the hosting company about what he is about to host ?
This might be a necessary step and feels better to have some backup when its getting hot.__--- Nils Valentin ---

I do not know whether register.com will allow this, but register.com was developed towards businesses... Granted it is not cheap, but it is secure and has a great uptime.

Yes.
He should be carfull. So should you. Dont get caught in legal battles also dont try to find a host thats secure. Either shut the website down all together or if the court allows it he should think about changing the company identity so that he might be hidden from these other companys. Its only a suggestion id check its all legal and ok first that the most important bit.
