    * [education] The world's biggest hole

WELCOME to the Mirny mine, which is also the biggest hole in the world.

Sitting just below the Arctic Circle in Siberia, the Mirny diamond mine stretches to more than 1.5km wide and more than 500m deep. Air space above the mine is a no-go zone because the massive hole creates enough air turbulence to suck aircraft into its clutches.

While the Kalgoorlie Super Pit gold mine in Western Australia is longer at 3.5km and about the same width, the Mirny mine is much deeper than the Kalgoorlie mine's 360m. That might change, though. The WA mine is expected to eventually be gouged to more than 500m.

About 165 million cubic metres of rock have been removed from the Mirny mine in the hunt for diamonds since operations began in the 1950s.
    Continued here.

Gonna take a bit of fill to fill that in.

The pit sits at the edge of the town Mirny, population 40,000, which is constantly exposed to the smell of rotten gas from hydrosulphide, which escapes from the mine.
Sounds like a nice place to live

Massive? That's tiny. The Grand Canyon is a mile deep and averages 10 miles across..and it's travelled daily by sightseeing aircraft.

I don't know what you're used to looking at, but that's quite big.

Manmade holes, and not natural formations.

Still, I doubt the reason it is a no fly zone is due to turbulance since the Grand Canyon is much deeper.

Us Russians love naming things peace or world (Mir), never really noticed that before

    Looks like a crater

nope nope, not biggest at all, check out this one, it literally dwarfs the size of that one, and the money haul from it is far greater.

Also, it is only no fly zone for HELICOPTERS, not for airplanes.

Wow, imagine waking up right on the edge of that thing. That is an instant heart-attack there.

Heh, I've just looked at both Arizona one and that Siberian one on Google Earth. Too bad closeup isn't 100%.

If you want to include natural landforms then the Mariana Trench is 36,000 feet deep
