    Allowing External MySQL Access?

I've noticed that some hosting providers don't allow external MySQL for security reasons, while others don't seem to have a problem with it.

What are the pros and cons?

pro people can connect to it

It depends on how you setup the user permissions allowing external access other then local host, so you can limit it by users. I normally firewall the port and allow access to certain IPs only.

Well, I think those hosting providers are trying to protect you, on their behaf. As long as you are strict on which hosts the database can be accessed from, and that a strong password is used, I don't see a problem with doing so.
