Anyway, i was planning on getting a vps package i was curious to know if running java would be a problem... i have planned to buy a package from servint. Their sales took a while to respond but the repsonse was really detailed. They dont recommend running java on a vps account, as i had previously thought and also mentioned that it would slow down everything else on the account. But i cant afford a dedicated server. To clarify that the java is for a chat program its not IRC.
Im going for their Essential VPS account... Unless someone can suggest a decent server for $40/pr month inclusive lol.
I would be running about 10 active sites and 30 other smaller accounts.
Servint is correct - Java on a VPS is a real dog. You either need a high end VPS or a dedicated server to do it 'properly'. Servint doesn't forbid you to run it on their VPS's however, so you may give it a try. Alot of it depends on the amount of memory the java app will be using.
One thing you might try are the command line options that limit memory. '-Xms' will limit the initial heap size, and '-Xmx' will limit the maximum heap size. I can't promise that this will keep java in line, but it won't hurt to try.
