Automate db dump, encrypt, and ftp or email for remote backup

    Hope someone can help.

Have a few sites that are php/mysql and would like to find a way to automate backing up the db and archiving it off the VPS.

Ideally run either every night or once a week, depending on the site.

Have it dump the db just like I would do manually through phpmyadmin.

Some way to encrypt in case of sensitive data maybe?

And then either ftp to another server or email to an account... would be interested in both methods.

And, a dummed down, newbie version of all this if possible.

    Thanks for any help.

This looks interesting and like it just might work

Thanks. Any idea on a way to encrypt or secure before sending though?

Use zip -e -p password instead of bzip2.

Kinda nasty to store passwords in scripts though. careful with security.

    Thanks, I'll look into that.

Yeah, I'll have to weigh each instance and whether the risks associated are greater than the efficiency.

One thing you could do is create a READ ONLY id for the database. Don't use the same password used for R/W access.
