Thread: ssh failed

  1. #1

    ssh failed

sshd has failed, please contact the sysadmin.

I get that when restarting sshd via whm, on any of my cpanel boxes.

    How do I fix that?

Also, how do I make sure there is absolutely no access to wheel or root except my own wheel user, and no ssh keys, allowed hosts, etc?

    SSHd Failing:
    Check the log files...

    Wheel Users:
    grep ":0:" /etc/passwd

    SSH Keys:
    Check /root/.ssh/

They look ok. Make sure for a start that

    PermitRootLogin no

    Is in sshd.conf

Note that if "PermitRootLogin no" is in sshd.conf, this means you cannot connect via SSH as root - you will need another "normal" user who is a member of the wheel group that you can ssh in as, and "su" to root.

Can you still SSH into the box or are ssh dead?
