IE7.com?
Microsoft may be on the verge of releasing the latest version of its Internet Explorer web browser but it has been beaten by a competitor to the use of the IE 7 domain name.
Online users that key in www.ie7.com expecting to locate information on the upcoming Microsoftt browser IE 7, will instead see a big logo of Firefox, the open source browser developed by Mozilla.
The logo includes a link back to Mozilla's site, and a disclaimer statement at the top of the web page reads: "Neither this site nor Mozilla is connected with Microsoft."
When contacted, a spokesperson for Mozilla said in an email the site was created by a "web user who is not affiliated with Mozilla Corp", adding that the company has no information about this site.
A check with Register.com revealed that the domain was issued to a UK internet services company called Digital Dataflow. The domain was registered in 1999, and is next due for renewal on 8 March, 2007.
Incidentally, the www.ie6.com URL address also does not belong to Microsoft but to a search portal which features links to a number of Microsoft products, such as Internet Explorer, Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2000.
Last month Microsoft filed three lawsuits in a US federal court against cyber squatters it alleges reaped profits in bad faith. The suits revolve around more than 600 domain names.HostingChoice - Shared and Reseller Hosting

Kind of ironic that that domain would have a BIG Firefox logo

Yeah, apparently the owner likes Firefox so he did it to piss off Microsoft I suppose.

The owner of ie7.com is making a big simple statement. Not sure if M$ will come after him. That would get interesting.

Doesn't seem to me that there's a whole lot they can do from a legal standpoint.

You're missing the point, if there IS a trademark under "IE7", then it was registered after the domain, therefore MS at this point, are S.O.L.

Maybe it's to make the statement that IE7 and Firefox are equally lame when trying to use ftp to upload, delete, or rename files on ones website.

I don't think they'd be able to go after the domain owner nor Mozilla. It's not like they're making any money by selling Firefox, so there's no monetary gain (leaving aside Mozilla being non-profit and receiving funds from large companies)

Would you not think IE7 is a registered trade mark.
For IE6 and previous - Micrsosoft® Internet Explorer®
For IE7 - Windows® Internet Explorer®
So IE is only a trademark when it is used in the full term and the number or "IE" has nothing to do with the trademark.
Lets face it, you wouldnt be able to say "ie. blah blah blah" when giving an example anymore if it was a trademark.
So there isnt much microsoft can do or say on the matter.
