I have read a lot of discussions and recommendations in this forum about what web site to choose but I am so confused and don't know what web hosts to choose. I just need a 500 mb web space and 20 -30 Gb bandwidth. I want to start a very small e-commerse website and will sell on this website. My website will host a lot of post card and picture images (500 images maybe, each image about 80 kb). I probably expect 20 customers a day since the business just starts but it may have more customers later on.
A lot of people mentioned Hostgator and Wireline and looks like they provide a lot of space and bandwidth at a very affordable price. I also did a search and found Inmotionhosting.com but looks like thay are too good to be true, but they are one of the BBB online.
Could anyboday tell me if hostgator or Wireline are just scams or they are honest and reliable hosts. Do they provide good and quick support. As fas as I know they only support 24 hour email and live chat. About Inmotionhosting.com, does anyboday know anything about this host?
Also where can I buy SSL certificate. Is this just a onetime fee and I can use it forever. Do webhosts charge a set up fee if I buy the SSL certificate from someone else? Can someone also recommend a good online merchant account provider?
SSLs are purchased annually, you can buy it and renew it based on yearly basis. you can get them as low as $14.95/year.
Have not done business with either one. so cannot elaborate on their service
GS RichCopy 360 Enterprise - Voted #1 for data migration and replication in terms of performance and features. Replicate data across between servers in the same network, WAS, or even across the internet
You can buy SSLs at positivessl.com comodo.com thawte.com or many other places.
The price usually is for one year (you can buy it for more though. Some hosts may charge you for the installation, althrough you can install your SSL from your control panel directly many times (depending of which control panel does your host offer).
About a merchant account, if you're in the USA I can recommend you Wells Fargo for Merchant account and Payment Gateway.
honest99, you may buy SSL certificate at geotrust.com . You have to do it every year and different hosts sell it at different prices. All depends on the amount of services you're going to use.
As for a merchant account you may use MonsterMerchantAccount.
Your request for hosting is pretty basic, why not get a eCommerce account somewhere. Most likely the provider will have everything included in the packages such as SSL, free merchant account, store, etc. However, these eCommerce packages can tend to be on the high side.
To answer your question about HostGator, I suggest you read up on reviews regarding their service, support and overall quality. Once you do so, this may give you a better idea of how they run business. That doesn't only go for HostGator, I would say read reviews on each host you have in mind. Once you have a list, email the sales or support department and get an idea of their response times and friendlyness of the staff.
SSL certs can be purchased at domain registars. Also some hosting providers offer SSL certs that can be installed for you for a small fee or even free.
A good merchant is LinkPoint, and they are integrated into most industry billing software portals. http://www.linkpoint.com
Thank you for your advice. I will check with hostgator.com and kodohost.com to see how they respond to my questions. As far as internet merchant account provider, it looks like Wells Fargo is very good and they have their reputation but their internet discount rates and per transaction fee pretty high and I am looking for a cheapter rate. I looked at Link point but I don't see any rate for getting a merchant account (they offer Virtual Terminal and Payment gateway service but I don't see internet merchant account service). I will look at all the websites recommended for buying a SSL certificate.
I have some more questions:
-If I buy my own SSl certficate, do I still need the e-commerce feature that is "Shared SSL" for the webhosting company?
-Can you recommend an internet merchant account provider that is reliable but offers cheaper discount rate and per transaction rate?
Shared SSL is just that. It is an SSL which can be used by all customers of the server. No license needs to be purchased on a shared SSL. Generally, its a wildcard cert that can be pointed the the users root directory.
"https://yourusername.hostfrog.com" and the non-secure "http://www.yourdomain.com" point to the same home page.
I have used Hostgator in the past. They are a reputable company as you can tell they have been around for years. Also, they just partnered with Soholaunch so that can be included in your package. I left them 2 years ago. Not much of any problems. As for Wireline, I don't know much about them. Sorry.
